What is Other-Terrestrial?

Over 900 years in the future, mankind has spread to the stars.  We have colonized entire solar systems, building within them countless stations and habitats – more humans live in space itself than could ever live on planets alone.  In our home system around the star we call Sol, the population has risen into the trillions, with the vast bulk of them living in massive space stations that orbit the star itself.

Beyond Earth, a thousand other stars now are surrounded by humanity’s colonies.  Many grow, and prosper, and with the discovery of faster-than-light travel, they are no longer isolated from their original home.

But we are not alone in the galaxy.  Intelligent life exists, and coexists with us, but it is a rare and precious thing.  Most are unlike us, in both thought and deed.  But there are things we find in common; a desire to live, to learn, to control our destinies.  We may be different, but these differences are not irreconcilable.

Alliances have been built and enemies have been made, but there is no endless war between the stars.  A true peace, even if fragile at times, reigns.

Yet there are still dangers.  Between the stars, in the deep void, exist beings known as Leviathans.  These beings defy the known laws of nature itself.  Larger than any ship, larger even than some worlds, they are a force unto themselves.

Where they go, devastation and terror follow.  Reality itself warps, and they are seemingly unassailable.  Inexorable.

While Earth itself is no longer considered the seat of humanity, even in the home system, she is not forgotten.  Disaster and tragedy have marred her beautiful surface, but life perseveres.

And she still holds surprises – as a species of ancient beings who have been in hiding have chosen now to reveal themselves to humanity . . . to join them in seeking their futures among the stars.  Beings known as Shoggoths.

They are stranger to us than any alien we have yet encountered.  They have lived, and watched us, for all of our history.  Their secrets are still their own, and many wonder what the goal of these . . . other-terrestrials truly is.

This story will follow the city-ship called the Craton.  The first of her kind, built into an ancient and mysterious asteroid that was born at the dawn of the universe.  The Craton and her crew will travel into places unknown to humanity, from those that show the incredible glory and power of our universe to those that seem – at least on the surface – to be inconsequential.  They will meet strange and unique beings, aliens and even humans who have changed themselves in ways that make them almost unrecognizable.  They will contend with stellar empires and beings whose mysteries we can scarcely penetrate.

*******

Other-Terrestrial is a science fiction story that seeks to blend the optimistic view of classic fiction such as Star Trek with the terrors of cosmic horror.  We will tell stories that aim to ask questions, to follow the frontiers of known science – and where we depart from it, to do so in a way that is consistent within its own rules.  We aim to have characters you will cheer for and those you will hate – but through it all they will have reasons for what they do, alien though they may be.

In our very near future, we ourselves will be forced to consider our own smallness in relation to an endless universe.  A universe that is rife with dangers greater than any we have ever known.  A universe that is hostile to our form of life.

But this does not mean we cannot become better than we are; we can rise to this challenge.  We can grow as beings, both individually and collectively.

Join us as we consider the future.
